THE Saint Anthony Catholic School Gymnasium was busy all day Sunday as basketball games in the 2012 Governor's Youth Athletic Invitational games were scheduled throughout the day.
In the early championship game of the day, the San Beda Red Cubs from the Philippines took on Guam's Saint Anthony Raiders in the 12-under division. At the end of four quarters of play, the Red Cubs managed to get by the Raiders 47-42 to clinch the title.
In the opening quarter, the Red Cubs came storming out to a quick 7-0 lead to set the tempo of the game. Jhan Du Luna and Christian Calimag led the way combining for seven points.
It wasn't until midway through the first quarter when the Raiders put their first point on the board after a made free throw by Rodolfo Garza. But San Beda continued to pour out the offense on Saint Anthony and eventually closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run, upping their lead to 15-3 at the end of one quarter.
The Raiders seemed to settle down in the second quarter and began to play a bit more focused. The trio of Garza, Ricky Brown and Jason Perez led an early surge that trimmed the Red Cubs’ lead down to 17-16. Garza drained two 3-pointers in the scoring spree. With time on the clock winding down before halftime, San Beda went back to big man Roel Boreta for some offense. Boreta consistently nailed baskets from right outside the paint to help his team build a 25-19 lead at the end of the half.
Second half
Much like the second quarter, the Raiders came out at the start of the second half going on a 7-1 run to make it a one-point game. Ricky Brown and Jonathan Metra led the way offensively. Despite the Raiders' effort to take a lead, the Red Cubs stayed poised and focused, eventually rebuilding a five-point lead before the third quarter would come to a close.
With 10 minutes left in their tournament life, both teams knew what was at stake in the final quarter. Ten seconds into the match, Garza dialed in from long range and was all net to trim their deficit to 33-31. The Red Cubs responded to the early strike by the Raiders and went on a 6-0 run led by Boreta and Calimag. Each team turned up the heat on defense and forced the other to commit several turnovers. However, neither was able to capitalize in a three-minute span.
Midway through the quarter, the Raiders' Garza and Perez made back-to-back buckets to make it a 41-37 game. However, San Beda answered each time to keep the margin at four or more points. When the final buzzer sounded, the Red Cubs charged the floor after earning the five-point (47-42) margin of victory.
Boreta led the Red Cubs offensively, scoring a game-high 20 points, while teammate Calimag dropped eight. In the losing effort, Brown led the Raiders, scoring 18 points, while Garza added 12.
