The Central Lanes Bowling Center was busy Sunday afternoon as several of our island’s senior bowlers competed for the October title in the Senior Bowler of the Lanes Tournament.

With only a few more months left before the grand finals, bowlers were vying for the end-of-the-year chance.  Entering the final match of the day, Bal Perez and Zaldy Ponce battled one another for the crown.  At the end of the match it was Perez who defeated Ponce.

Entering the championship round, the fourth-seeded Perez took advantage of mishaps by Ponce who opened in his first four frames.  From that point on, the tenth-seeded Ponce could never get back into his game that allowed Perez to open the game wide.

Mary Pangelinan, who received a gold medal in the Malaysia tournament, was the top seed followed by Joe Mafnas, Jhun Viray, and Perez.

The rest of the field participated in the shootout round.  Ponce got past ninth-seeded Kin Sablan and eighth-seeded Buddy Saludo in bracket one of the shootout round. Seventh-seeded Norbie De Silva rolled over fifth-seeded Cindy Reyes and sixth-seeded Chuck Meno Sr.

In the quarterfinals, Perez nipped De Silva 169-163 with handicap. Meanwhile, Ponce slipped past third-seeded Viray 200-187 with handicap.  The semifinals saw upsets in both brackets as top seeded Pangelinan fell to Ponce and second-seeded Mafnas fell to Perez setting up the final match and the eventual win by Perez.

Senior Bowler of the Lanes tournament action will resume on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 11am.  The event is open to all bowlers aged 50 and older or those who will be 50 by Dec. 31.
