DESPITE a delivery of rain showers by Mother Nature this past weekend, more than a thousand of the island’s young soccer players made their way to the Guam Football Association National Training Center in Harmon for some Chevrolet Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League action.
With several games scheduled throughout the day, all in attendance were sure to get their fix of action around the pitch. In the U12 B-Division, the Paintco Strykers and Wings FC battled one another in a tight match. At the end of regulation, the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie.
With the Wings FC holding on to a slim 2-1 lead late in the game, the Strykers had their backs against the wall as time on the clock continued to tick away. However, with seconds remaining, Paintco’s Kidman Carriaga managed to put the ball through the goal and find the back of the net to equalize the game.
Playing good soccer on both sides of the field, the Wings were able to keep their opponents scoreless for the entire first half. Offensively, a goal from Michael Chung gave the Wings a 1-nil lead minutes before the signal for halftime was blown.
After returning from the short break, the Wings increased their lead to 2-0 after a shot Hannah Matsushita zipped past the Paintco goalkeeper. However, the two-goal deficit didn’t deter the Strykers from putting up a fight. Paintco was able to cut their deficit in half when Kevin Zhu converted a free kick that was able to make its way past the goal line.
