AFTER only a week of lapse time, several of the women’s soccer teams from the 7-A-Side soccer league returned to action.
However, the ladies transitioned from playing on the outdoor pitch into the Guam Sports Complex gym in Harmon as the Bud Light Women’s Futsal League got its new season underway.
In one of the matches scheduled, the Doosan Lady Crushers took on Quality Distributors. Continuing their winning ways from the outdoor league, the Lady Crushers picked up 10-7 season-opener victory.
From the opening minutes of the game, Doosan managed to open up an early lead in the game. Despite strong efforts by Quality, the Lady Crushers continued to apply pressure defensively while capitalizing on the offensive side. Heading into the final minutes of the game, the Quality deficit grew to as much as seven goals.
However, Quality didn’t deter from continuing to play hard despite trailing huge. Led by a feisty and aggressive Paige Surber, Quality managed to trim their deficit down to four. Surber needed only a few minutes to tally three second-half goals in the mini-surge.
Doosan needed to find a way to slow the Quality momentum down, and that they did when Surber looked to find the back of the goal once again, but was met by the highly alert Crushers’ goalkeeper Shelby Kier. As the minutes on the clock continued to wind down, Quality tried effortlessly to get themselves back into the game and perhaps steal a win. However, the Lady Crushers held ground and notched a win in the win column.
Willter led the Lady Crushers with four goals and teammate Kristin Thompson added a hat trick in the winning effort. Kim Sherman scored twice and Tatyana Ungacta scored the Lady Crushers’ other goal.
Masters defeat Paintco Lady Strykers
In a very exciting game, goalkeeper Cara Walsh scored the game-winner after connecting on a kick-in for goal with less than five minutes left on the clock to break a first-half 4-4 tie with the Paintco Lady Strykers. The Lady Strykers quickly gained a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game behind strikes from Felicia Alumbaugh and two from Mia Santos.
The Masters weren’t able to find the back of the net until a penalty kick opportunity following a Lady Strykers handball violation in the penalty area midway through the half. Rhoda Bamba sent her hard shot to the bottom left corner of the goal, just escaping the reach of Lady Strykers’ keeper Sonja Sanchez. Later, Pauline Toves connected on a Kyung Shipman corner kick to get her team within one.
About six minutes later, a Lady Strykers own goal off a header deflection would equalize the match. Bamba came through once more on a free kick following a foul on the Lady Strykers’ Caroline Quigley. Quigley later knotted the game again after connecting on a Christina Duenas pass.
Hyundai cruises past Pika Soccer Club
In the day’s first game, Hyundai defeated Pika Soccer Club 8-2 behind hat tricks from Arisa Recella and Tanya Blas-Cruz. Deana Garcia scored the other two goals for Hyundai. Catherine Aquinde and Christine “Ubi” Ubaldo scored Pika’s pair.
League action continues Sunday with the Masters taking on the Lady Crushers at 3 p.m. followed by Quality vs. Pika at 4 p.m. and Hyundai vs. the Lady Strykers at 5 p.m. All matches are at the Guam Sports Complex gym and admission is free.
