WITH one more game left to be played in the 2012 Bud Light Women’s 7-A-Side Soccer League, the Doosan Lady Crushers battled the dck Masters for all the marbles in the league’s championship game. Inside the pitch of the Guam Football Association National Training Center in Harmon, both teams came out looking to clinch the crown. At the end of the match, the Lady Crushers claimed stake to the title and celebrated their 4-2 victory over the Masters.

Early in the match, it was the Lady Crushers who struck first and posted the game’s first goal. Doosan’s Simie Willter spotted an unmarked Kristin Thompson on the right side of the field and connected with her teammate. Thompson managed to convince Masters goalkeeper Rebecca Staben to challenge her away from the goal. It was then that Thompson capitalized and sailed a shot into an open goal for a 1-0 lead.

Despite trailing early in the match, the Masters responded back immediately to equalize the game on a converted goal by Cara Walsh. Both teams continued to apply pressure on both sides of the field. However, it was the Lady Crushers who took advantage of a breakdown on the Masters’ defense, regaining a 2-1 lead. Thompson recorded her second goal after receiving a perfectly placed pass from Willter. Time on the clock expired to end the first half with the Lady Crushers maintaining their one-goal lead.

Second half

After returning to action in the second half, the Masters only needed two minutes to knot the game again. The Masters’ Christine Simard found an open Rhoda Bamba who scored a goal after sailing a shot right over Lady Crushers goalie Shelby Kier. Halfway through the deciding half, the Lady Crushers gained the upper hand again. With three Masters defenders converging on Willter who was sprinting toward the goal, Willter passed the ball to Thompson, who finished the eventual game-winning goal. Andrea Odell added an insurance goal for the Lady Crushers off a pass from Thompson with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Instead of going into desperate defensive mode, both the Masters and Lady Crushers used the remaining time in an effort to score more goals. Both teams had a handful of opportunities but could not convert in the final minutes. When the final signal to end play was blown, the Crushers raised their hand victorious.

Hyundai in 3rd place

In the earlier consolation game, Hyundai claimed third place after defeating Quality Distributors 5-2. Hyundai was led by Olivia Flores’ two goals. Arisa Recella, Shana Spindel and Tanya Blas-Cruz added on to Hyundai’s tally. Paige Surber and April Talledo scored Quality’s two goals.

Despite the 7-A-Side league coming to a conclusion, several of the league’s teams will continue with soccer action as they begin the 2012 Bud Light Women’s Futsal League this Sunday. Games start at 3 p.m. at the Guam Sports Complex.
