Cougars claim four slots on first team
WHILE players continue to prepare for the upcoming playoffs in the IIAAG High School Girls Volleyball League, coaches and school representatives got together last night to determine this year’s All-Island selection.
With all the talent stacked around the entire league, there was no clear picture as to who will be chosen and placed. However, at the end of the night, coaches came to a conclusion on their selections.
Paving the way for the 2012 season, Academy of Our Lady of Guam’s Stephanie Bordallo was voted and named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Bordallo played a major role as the team’s setter and helped the Cougars to a league-best (15-1) regular season record. Bordallo’s success was also complimented by having three other Cougars named to the All-Island First Team. Joining the MVP are Gemilie Ilao, Ladera Linn, and Celeste Guarin.
Ilao and Linn were selected for the right-side hitter and outside-hitter positions, respectively. Guarin was selected as the league’s top libero. Joining the three Cougars on the first team in the middle blockers position are Simon Sanchez’s Giselle Kho and St. John's’ Destiny Castro. Rounding out the six-woman team is the Sharks’ Edelene Cruz. Cruz joins Linn as the other outside hitter.
Sharks, Islanders land two in second team
The JFK Islanders and Simon Sanchez Sharks led the way for the All-Island Second Team selection as they landed two players apiece. The Islanders’ Amanda Torres and Kristin Sapp were picked for the middle blocker and outside hitter position, respectively. Meanwhile, the Sharks’ Shaniah Aguon, and Kae’Ana Camacho earned their way into the libero and right-side hitter positions. Joining the four players is selected second team setter Anisa Nedlec of Okkodo, and outside hitters Danielle Sherwin and Paige Surber. Sherwin and Surber are seniors from Academy and Southern High.
