YESTERDAY marked the opening day for the 2012 IIAAG Middle School Girls Volleyball League. In one of the day’s scheduled matches, the Harvest Christian Academy Eagles played host to the visiting Bishop Baumgartner Lady Obispos at the Maite campus. Both teams played excellent volleyball and gave their fans many things to cheer about in their first game of the season. However, only one team was able to walk away with their first win of the season. Needing only two sets, the Lady Obispos got their season off to a good start after picking up the 25-20, 25-19 win.

Opening set

In the opening set, both teams came out showing a bit of nervousness and jitters as they relied on several errors to put points on the board early on. The Lady Obispos found themselves up 7-1 after the Lady Eagles committed six unforced errors. However, the lead was cut to three after Bishop committed several errors of their own to make it a 7-5 game.

With both teams continuing to trade points back and forth, the game remained tight until 12-9. From that point on, the Lady Obispos scored five unanswered points courtesy of Serena Bordallo and Anna Toves’ two kills and two aces combined. Despite trailing 17-9, the Lady Eagles were determined to continue fighting. It didn’t take too long for the game to get interesting as Harvest capitalized on six Bishop errors and two kills from Sydney Prudente to equalize the game at 17-17.

Both teams would tie the game once more at 19-19 before the Lady Obispos took over. Three straight service aces by Rosita Duenas gave Bishop a 22-19 lead. The Eagles were able to put a momentary halt to the Bishop run after an unforced error made it 22-20. Three plays later, the Lady Obispos closed out the opening set for the 25-20 win.

Second set

At the start of the second set, the Lady Obispos came storming out of the floodgates to build a 10-2 lead. The Eagles were able to end the early bleeding and added five points to their tally and trimmed their deficit down to three.

Later in the set, the Eagles found themselves down 19-11 and were forced to call a timeout. Upon returning from the timeout, Harvest found some hope and scored seven unanswered points to make it a 19-18 game. In the mini-surge, Bryn Collier recorded two kills for the Lady Eagles. Despite narrowing the gap, the Eagles weren’t able to keep the momentum going and succumbed to the Lady Obispos’ offense led by Duenas and Christiana Carbullido who combined for two aces and two kills in the final run that ended the match.

With the victory, the Lady Obispos begin their season with a 1-0 record, while the Lady Eagles start out with a 0-1 record. IIAAG Middle School Girls Volleyball action resumes this Thursday with five games on schedule. The Lady Obispos play host to the St. John’s Knights, while the Eagles are on a bye.
