Two other games cut short due to weather
WHEN the dck Masters and Quality Distributors showed up to the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon for action in the 2012 Bud Light Women’s 7-A-Side Soccer League, the ladies on both teams were ready to get it on.
With both teams laying everything out on the pitch, deciding an eventual winner came down to the difference of one goal. When the signal to end play was blown, the Masters managed to edge out their tough opponents 3-2 for the victory.
Entering the second half of play, dck Masters held a 2-nil lead over Quality. However, the deficit didn’t deter Quality from surging back to make things interesting. In the early minutes, Paige Surber was awarded a penalty kick which she converted to make it a one-goal game.
Surber and company were just starting to heat things up. Not too long later, Surber made her way through the Masters defense that allowed her to take a shot. However, it was teammate Vanessa Quinata who managed to equalize the game on the shot after zipping one right past dck goalkeeper Rebecca Staben.
The dck Masters remained calm and focused on the mission at hand despite losing their two-goal lead. With several minutes burnt off the clock, Cheri Stewart boosted her team back in front of Quality after making perfect use of a pass received from teammate Christine Simard. Stewart lasered a shot past the Quality goalkeeper. After a brief interruption in play, action resumed with Quality diligently trying to once again equalize the game. However, a chance went astray when Quinata tried to duplicate her earlier feat with Surber only to send the shot wide. A trailing Surber tried to follow, but only found the side of the goal.
Minutes later, the Masters celebrated their win when the final whistle was blown to end the game. Dck notched their first two goals of the game in the 19th and 20th minutes of play. Credited with the game’s first goal was Rhoda Bamba, while teammate Stewart followed with a goal of her own.
Crushers 5, Guam Shipyard 1
In other games, the Doosan Lady Crushers scored five goals to defeat Hyundai 5-1 in a game shortened by the onset of lightning during the late afternoon downpour.
Kim Sherman, who leads the league’s Golden Boot race, scored twice in the game called minutes into the second half. Andrea Odell, Kristin Thompson and Abbey Iriarte scored the other goals for the Lady Crushers. Olivia Flores scored Hyundai’s lone goal.
Guam Shipyard led 2-1 against Pika Soccer Club before the game was called in the second half. Shipyard’s Demi-Rae Shimizu led the way for her team scoring both goals, while Pika’s Jane O’Connor was credited with the lone goal.
