HS Girls Volleyball season-opener later tonight

FOR a small island out in the Pacific Ocean, a weekend on Guam never goes without any action offered from our sports scene. No matter what type of weather Mother Nature plans to throw at us, or what one’s schedule might look like, you are almost guaranteed to find something worthy of watching. Let’s take a look at what’s going on in this action-packed weekend.

Interscholastic sports

A few weeks ago, several high schools participated in the Annual Shieh Invitational Volleyball tournament to get a feel of what’s in store for the upcoming IIAAG High School Girls Volleyball season. Later tonight, teams will begin their quest for the 2012 championship.

Looking to defend their championship will be the Simon Sanchez Lady Sharks. Game times are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. However, due to their double-session schedule, the George Washington Geckos will begin play at 6:30 p.m.

High school sports will keep the Friday schedule busy, as runners will take their talents to several different courses for competition in IIAAG High School Cross Country League action. Meets are scheduled to being at 4:30 p.m.

In volleyball and cross-country action, athletes from John F. Kennedy and Okkodo High School will be providing some hard-hitting action on the gridiron. Both teams will be squaring off at 7 p.m. at the Okkodo Field.

Guam National Youth Football Federation

Every weekend, the University of Guam and Eagles football field is always lined and packed with family and friends ready to support their favorite teams and players in the GNYFF. Both days will be busy, as eight teams will provide action over two days. On Saturday, the Cinnabon Island Saints will take on the Northern Falcons at the Eagles Field, while the Northern Yigo Jets is set to take on the LMS Hal’s Angels at UOG.

Sunday is slated to be just as intense and exciting as the Hawaiian Rock Eagles and HP Granite Giants bump heads at Eagles Field. The Tan Holding Cowboys take on the GTA Teleguam Raiders at the University of Guam.

Game times are as follows:

  • Mandikiki Division: 9:30 a.m.;
  • Manha Division: 10:30 a.m.;
  • Metgot Division: 12:30 p.m.; and
  • Matua Division: 2:30 p.m.

Golden Hoops Classic

Hoops action at the Tamuning Gym continues later tonight with the Inarajan Hawks taking on Ada’s Trust in the 40-plus division of the Bud Light Golden Hoops Classic Fall Tournament.

Tip off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. The tournament will take Saturday off and then return to the floor on Sunday with 10 games on the days scheduled. The first game of the day will start at 11 a.m. and the night-capper is slated for 8 p.m.
