GYBA playoffs this weekend

THE Guam Youth Basketball Association (GYBA) Youth Summer Basketball League 10-under division regular season came to a close Tuesday night at the Astumbo Gym.

In one of three scheduled games on the evening, the Warriors Blue went head-to-head against the Mavericks Blue. Combining speed on offense with a stifling defense, the Mavericks doubled up on the Warriors to clinch the 22-11 victory.

In the opening minutes of the game, the Mavericks set the tone early as they jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Despite allowing the Warriors to equalize the game at 3-3, the remainder of the quarter was all Mavericks. In the final two minutes, the trio of Ryan Taitague, Jacob Herrera and Colin Santiago led a five-point run to make it an 8-3 game after one.

The Warriors didn't deter from sticking to their game plan in the second period. Two minutes into play, the scoreboard reflected an 8-8 tie after the Warriors generated a 5-0 run of their own. Masato Tsuji led the surge scoring four points. Moments before both teams went into the halftime break, Taitague nabbed a Warriors pass and went coast-to-coast for the half's final points and gave his team a slim 10-8 lead.

Returning from the break, the Mavericks seemed to have turned up the intensity on both sides of the floor. Less than a minute into the third, Santiago and Herrera hit back-to-back jumpers to increase the lead to 14-8. Tough defense by the Mavs held the Warriors to two points in the quarter, while adding four of their own to hold an 18-10 lead going into the fourth.

With only six minutes of game time left, all the Mavericks had to do was play defense and that they did. Continuing with a half-court man-to-man, the Mavs held the Warriors to one point in the quarter. On the offensive side, four points were dropped courtesy of Jade Isezaki. At the final buzzer it was the Mavs who took the double-digit victory.

Guam Youth Basketball Association Youth Summer Basketball League action resumes this weekend with playoff action in full swing.
