Finishes 7th in respective heat

WHILE the 2012 Summer Olympics in London continues to roll on, athletes from various countries are working hard and doing their best to represent their respective nations.

Last night (Guam time), Guam’s Christopher Duenas did the island proud when he competed in the 100m freestyle swimming event. Duenas was the second of eight Guam athletes to have started competition in this year’s Olympics.

Racing in heat three, Duenas came off the blocks swimming in a very tough lane eight.

The island native completed the down and back length of the pool clocking in a time of 53.37 after touching the wall. Duenas was able to beat out Armenia’s Mikayel Koloyan to avoid finishing last in the heat.

Despite finishing the race in seventh, Duenas was less than a second behind the heat’s fifth- and sixth-place winners.

Bolivia’s Andrew Rutherfud and Islamic Republic of Iran’s Mohammad Bidayan beat out Duenas after clocking official times of 52.57 and 52.93, respectively.

Olympic action for Team Guam will resume on Aug. 6 when Track & Field athlete Derek Mandell takes a shot in the first round of the men’s 800m run. On Aug. 8, female athletes Amy Atkinson (Track & Field) and Maria Dunn (wrestling) will take their stand in this year’s Summer Games.

Look at what Locte did to train for swimming. Lifting 600 pd. tires everyday over and over. It's seems the strength training is a major requirement for training in any sport. 15 and 16 year olds seem to have the burst energy to get the speed done. After that age seems to work against the "gold" standard.

:-?

Most Guam athletes fail to go much beyond the first heat in any competition. ..

.Mike Reidy had a vision of a quality sports complex on Harmon Loop Road, where our athletes would have the venue to train for most current and future Olympic sports.

This complex could have been a ' sport magnet ' for Guam.

With vision Guam could have hosted most current and many future regional championship. We also could have hosted new regional championships.

Now we have the land used up in different ' Fiefdoms ' each ruled by a different sport federation.

The media currently ' hides ' many results of our athletes. Instead the media should highlight our performances and tag on the need for proper facilities, proper coaching and management.

The GNOC does very little in this area. Just look at the different sports in this years Olympics and look at what Guam offers in venues and coaches.
