Taimanglo retains title, Gyu captures welterweight
THE University of Guam Field House was filled with loud fans and supporters of mixed martial arts on Saturday night as fighters brought their A-game to the cage for PXC 32 action.
In a fight card that featured two championship bouts and the return of several fighters who have been away for some time, everyone in attendance was sure to get their dosage of intensity and excitement. One of the night’s biggest matches featured Guam’s “The Juggernaut” Baby Joe Taimanglo defending his featherweight title against Korea’s Jang Yong Kim. Taimanglo wasted no time pleasing the local crowd after picking up the win to keep the belt on Guam.
From the start of the fight, The Juggernaut came out pressing with a flurry of punches to set the tone. A hard combination from Taimanglo rocked and dazed Kim to set up an opening. Moments later, Kim found himself on the mat that allowed Taimanglo to take over with a series of attacks, forcing fight referee Tony DeAngelo to put a halt to the fight for the Taimanglo victory.
Welterweight champ Gyu
In the other title fight of the night, Guam’s Ryan “Biggs” Bigler and Korea’s Lim Hyun Gyu took it to one another in hopes of clinching the vacant welterweight championship. Both fighters stormed out proving their hunger to claim stake to the title. However, it was Gyu who rattled Biggs early on that sent the Guam native to the ground. The two fighters eventually ended up on the ground, but it was Gyu who gained the upper edge midway through the opening round as he sunk a chokehold around Bigler. Despite efforts to free himself, Bigler would succumb and was forced to tap out, giving Gyu the win and the title.
The eventful night began with an amateur fight featuring Jared Mellon taking on Joe Arriola. Shortly after the signal to start the fight was given, Arriola immediately became the aggressor as he began to throw several punches. However, unable to land anything on his opponent, Arriola paid dearly as Mellon responded with a hard takedown that looked to have hurt Arriola. Both fighters hung in throughout the entire first round.
Second-round action started much like the first with Arriola swinging for the fences. However, a patient and smart Mellon was able to respond by taking the match to the ground where he applied effective blows, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
Later in the evening, Ricky Camp and Jung Hoon Koh set up another Guam vs. Korea match. When the two fighters finished their bout, it was the Koreans who gained a 2-1 edge on the night as Koh defeated Camp via referee stoppage in the third round. Everything seemed to be going in favor of Camp after he secured the first two rounds of the night. However, in the final round, Koh was able to work his way to victory with strategic attacking that brought Camp to the mat for the eventual stoppage.
