WITH only two weeks left before playoffs in the 16-under division, both Mongmong-Toto-Maite teams in the 2012 Summer Jam Basketball League are looking to end round-robin play on a high note.

Last night at the Tamuning Gym, the Falcons II were looking to garner their first win of the season, while the Falcons I wanted win number two. Despite being brother teams, both brought their best game and performed their best up until the final buzzer. At the end of the game, it was the Falcons I that clipped their brothers 50-16.

From tip-off, the Falcons I set the tempo of the game to their liking as they quickly opened a double-digit (12-0) lead in six minutes of play.

Tevyn Jerome Afaisen was the hot hand early on for his team, recording seven points to include one from three-point land. The Falcons II put a stop to the bleeding when Ivan Dizon turned an offensive rebound into two points.

The wound opened right back up as the Falcons I dropped eight more points to increase their lead to 20-2. The duo of Jonard Serafico and Philip Taijeron were responsible for all eight in the mini-surge.

With only minutes remaining in the first half, the Falcons II were trying to add more points to trim the deficit before the break. Before time on the clock expired, Isaiah Quichocho drained a 3 to make it a 24-6 game at halftime.

Strong defense and quickness on offense began to widen the game in the first two minutes of the second half as the Falcons I made it a 31-6 game. Several steals by Serafico allowed his team to go on a seven-point rally. However, being down huge didn’t deter the Falcons II from continuing to give their best. A converted jumper from Randall Wiegand and a shot from downtown by Quichocho gave fans something to cheer about as the two boys made it a 31-11 game.

Late in the half, the Falcons II trailed 45-12 after giving up 10 unanswered points to their brother team. However, it was apparent that no matter what the scoreboard reflected, the Falcons II played on. Kevin Matsumoto proved that as he sank back-to-back shots with less than two minutes in the game. Before the game came to a close, the Falcons I added five more points to their game total to give them the victory at the buzzer.

Serafico and Rico Cruz led the Falcons I, scoring 12 points apiece, while teammate Afaisen added 11. In the losing effort, Quichocho and teammate Ivan Dizon led their team, dropping six and five points, respectively.
