POST-SEASON action in the Guam Amateur Baseball Latte Spring League resumed play earlier this week as teams continued to fight their way through the brackets in hopes of clinching a spot in this season’s championship game.
On Tuesday night, it was a battle between the 4th-seeded Agat Cardinals taking on the 5th-seeded Agat Mayor’s Office Cardinals. Heading into the match, only one thing was certain – an Agat team would advance. The real question was who it would be. At the end of the game, the answer was revealed and after picking up a 12-7 victory, the Agat Cardinals will advance while eliminating the Agat Mayor’s Office squad.
Both teams played excellent baseball in the early parts of the game as each remained within striking distance of the other. Heading into their half of the third inning, Agat trailed the Mayor’s Office by two runs (5-3). However, determination and continued confidence allowed Agat to equalize the game later in the inning. After narrowing their deficit down to a single run, Agat’s Davey Pecha capitalized on a wild pitch and crossed home plate for the tying run.
Before Agat Mayor’s Office could get out of the inning, their counterparts managed to score a few more runs to take an 8-5 lead. A hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded pushed Mariano Castaneda home to give Agat a 6-5 lead. Moments later, Justin Candoleta stroked a two-RBI single to drive in two runs and up the Agat lead.
Despite trying to stay alive and perhaps even steal a win, the Agat Mayor’s Office was only able to score two more runs while giving up four to find themselves down 12-7 when time had expired. Closing the night out for Agat was Jay Santos who nailed a two-RBI single to drive in the game’s final two runs.
With the victory, Agat advances to take on the Chalan Pago Amigos in a semifinals match. In their final regular season game, it was the Cardinals who dealt the Amigos their only blemish mark in the standings. The two teams will collide on Monday at the Okkodo Baseball Field with game time scheduled for 7 p.m.
