LAST night at the Tamuning Gym, the Cobras Basketball Club opened the night in the 2012 Summer Jam Basketball League.

The club's boys team, Cobras I, went head-to-head with their sister squad, Cobras II. At the end of 40 minutes of basketball action, it was the Cobras I who walked away with the 52-34 victory.

For the first three minutes of the game, it was all boys as Cobras I opened with an 8-0 run to take the early lead. Shaun Douglas Duenas was hot early on as he was credited with six points in the run. Cobras II didn't deter from playing their game and eventually ended the run after Maylain Benito converted a layup.

With six minutes left in the first half, Cobras II began to make a move and narrowed the gap to 14-10. Despite allowing their brothers to hit back-to-back shots, the ladies responded with four-straight baskets of their own backed by Jo'ani Gogues’ four points. The two teams would go into the halftime break with Cobras I holding on to a 21-14 lead.

Second half

The start of the second half was a bit more positive for the Cobras II squad as Janiko Gogue nailed a shot 20 seconds in and made it a 21-16 game. Cobras I responded immediately by creating another run to rebuild a 30-18 lead. However, the sister team showed their "girl power" and stepped up to the challenge, scoring six straight points to cut their deficit in half. Jo'ani Gogue and Benito combined for all six in the surge.

Late in the half, Cobras I went bananas from long distance and nailed four straight three-pointers to up their lead to 46-28. Noah Blas, Bryton Cepeda, and Duenas combined for all four conversions. Despite great efforts till the final buzzer, the girls fell short and suffered a defeat when the clock struck zero.

Duenas led the Cobras I with 10 points and two steals, while teammate Blas added nine. In the losing effort, Jo'ani Gogue led the Cobras II with 10 points, while teammate Benito dropped eight.
