WITH Guam’s 1-0 win over Cambodia Wednesday, the island’s U13 girls' national team is in sole possession of second place going into the final day of competition in Group C of the 2012 AFC U13 Girls Football Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Guam will next face Myanmar in both teams’ last match of the tournament. Guam needs to at least tie with Myanmar to place in the top two.
“I am so proud of the girls,” head coach Sam San Gil said via email from Vietnam. “Most of [Wednesday] the girls spent in bed trying to get well as a few were feeling sick. Despite this, they were able to gather as a team and pull off a win.”
In Wednesday’s game against Cambodia, Guam’s Caylani Estoy lifted her team with the only goal scored in the 25th minute. With the loss, Cambodia remains winless in the tournament and will next play host country Vietnam.
Also competing is the currently undefeated Thailand team against the Philippines. Should the Philippines record the upset against Thailand and if Guam wins its match against Myanmar, the coveted first-place spot will be determined by goal differential, of which Thailand currently has the largest at 12. Thailand has scored 14 goals and has only allowed two – both to Myanmar. Guam’s goal differential is two.
Guam’s current tournament record is 3-1, with wins over Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia. The island’s only loss happened against front-runner Thailand.
Vietnam and Myanmar are both 2-2 going into the final day of competition. Myanmar’s losses are to Thailand on the opening day of play and against host country Vietnam Monday. Vietnam’s two losses came against Guam and on Wednesday against Thailand.
In Group B action in Nanjing, China, the CNMI finished its tournament with a loss against Korea Republic.
