TOGETHER with hard work and tough defense, the Circle K Island Stunnerz earned their second straight win of the season in the Bud Light Guam Women’s Tackle Football League eight-woman game on Saturday afternoon.
The Stunnerz took on the ever-so-tough Team Legacy. The last time the two teams met, it was Circle K who defeated Legacy to advance to last season’s championship. However, entering the game, both teams knew it was a whole new game and it would take a lot to walk away a winner. At the end of the game, it was the Stunnerz who managed to squeak by with a 14-8 victory to remain unbeaten on the season.
The opening quarter gave everyone in attendance a feel and idea of what type of game was in store for both teams. With both defenses working effortlessly, the entire first period went scoreless as neither offense was able to penetrate through for point production. When the signal to switch sides of the field was blown, the scoreboard reflected “goose eggs” for both teams.
However, in the second quarter, the Stunnerz finally answered to end the game’s scoring drought to take a 6-0 lead. After marching their way downfield, Circle K set themselves up from less than 10 yards out from the end zone. It was then that Merced Flores pounded her way through the Legacy defense for an 8-yard touchdown. A failed PAT conversion kept the Stunnerz up by only six points.
With only several minutes before halftime, Team Legacy recognized the urgency of not going into the break scoreless. Their offense immediately went to work and refused to be denied their chance at scoring. After making their way into the red zone, Legacy quarterback Morgan Reyes took matters into her own hands and sprinted her way in for a touchdown. On the ensuing play, Shawnel Castro would convert the PAT to give Legacy an 8-6 lead. Time on the clock would expire before Circle K could do anything and left them trailing by two points heading into the break.
Second half
At the start of the second half, Legacy started out impressive as Kenisha Flores opened the third quarter with a quarterback sack. Continuing their dominance on defense early, Legacy looked to take the ball back as they forced the Stunnerz to a fourth-and-long situation. However, the Stunnerz’s Dana Benavente converted a power run up the middle for a first down.
Legacy paid dearly after allowing the first-down conversion, as several plays later Flores would hook up with Amy Blas for a 30-yard touchdown reception to make it a 12-8 game. On the PAT attempt, Flores ran a quarterback keeper that was good to increase her team’s lead to 14-8.
Despite putting on some great effort to produce some offense, Legacy was denied each time as the Stunnerz defense turned it up a notch. The entire fourth quarter went scoreless, as neither team was able to punch it in. More importantly, the Stunnerz played tremendous defense and held Legacy’s offensive weapons in check.
The Bud Light Guam Women’s Tackle Football League action will resume Saturday with two games on schedule.
