WITH school over and summer vacation well underway, many of our young athletes will continue to keep themselves busy with basketball action. This past Saturday, the Guam Youth Basketball Association (GYBA) Youth Basketball Summer Classic opened with about seven games played on the day. Teams in the Under-10 and Under-12 divisions met up at the Astumbo gymnasium and here’s a look at the day’s results.

Under-12

In the older of the two groups on the day, two different Knights teams were able to pick up victories over their opponents to get things started on the right note. Taking on the Mavericks White, Knights Red was able to steal a 27-14 win. The Knights’ Dylan Franquez led all scorers with 20 points, while Illian San Nicolas led the Mavericks with four points in the losing effort.

The Knights Black had a much easier time than their fellow teammates as they cruised to a 23-6 victory over the Yellow Jackets Blue. Gavin Malwe pumped in 11 points for the Knights, while DS Haddy scored four points for the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets, however, would not go on empty-handed at the end of the day as their White team earned a 17-2 win over the Mavericks Blue. Andrew Sampanyan drained 13 points for the Yellow Jackets White and in the losing effort, Gian Carlo scored the Mavericks’ only points.

In the final under-12 division matchup, the Raiders and Warriors White went head-to-head. At the end of the match, it was the Raiders who trounced their opponents to get the 39-12 win. Alshea Grape’s 11 points led the Raiders. Jaren Santos recorded seven points for the Warriors.

Under-10 results

  • Yellow Jackets White defeated Warriors Blue, 31-10. Thelo Orchiro scored a game-high 22 points for the Yellow Jackets. Izeahan Martinez led the Warriors Blue with three points.
  • Knights defeated Mavericks White, 14-8. The Knights were led by Tim Simon’s six points en route to victory.
  • Warriors Blue defeated Yellow Jackets White, 12-10. Masato Tsuji led the Warriors with four points, while Allan Aranas added four of his own in the losing effort for the Yellow Jackets.
