WITH the strength, honor and pride of the men’s national soccer team as ambassadors for Guam through the sport of soccer, the team will soon be proudly known in international circles as the “Matao.”
To launch the team’s new identifying nickname and showcase the progress of the team, the Guam Football Association will host Matao vs. All-Stars, a community event set for Friday, June 1, featuring a match between the Matao and a Budweiser Men’s Soccer League all-star team at the GFA facility in Harmon beginning at 6:30 p.m.
During the event, Matao head coach Gary White also will officially announce the 22-man roster selected to be part of Guam’s traveling team. The traveling team will be headed to Bacolod City in the Philippines to face the Azkals, the Philippines’ men’s national soccer team, for a Philippine Independence Day exhibition match June 12. While in the Philippines, the Matao also will play matches against two professional clubs in Manila.
Although admission is free, a raffle fundraiser will be held to benefit the women’s national program. Additionally, members of the women’s team will be hosting a halftime event for spectators.
Youth spectators wishing to participate in the halftime event must be wearing their soccer club or school team jersey and cleats.
The event will begin with a short introduction of the island’s youth national teams, including the U14 boys’ team that recently competed in Beijing, China, and the U13 girls’ team, which will be heading to Vietnam for a tournament beginning June 7. Several members of the National Academy, Guam’s elite youth soccer players, will also be introduced at the event.
A concession stand will be onsite with food and drinks for purchase. For more information about the event, call GFA at 637 4321.
