THE Guam International Raceway in Yigo was packed with hundreds of Smokin’ Wheels enthusiasts on Sunday.
With near-perfect weather conditions, everyone in attendance was treated to several action-packed events that included Enduro, Mud Bogs, and even the Tuff Rig Challenge.
When all the dust was settled and the challenges completed, winners were recognized for their hard work and effort.
In the Off-Road Enduro race, less than 10 laps separated the overall winner from the third place finisher. Taking home the championship in the long and grueling race was Ikuo Hanawa who completed a total of 78 laps. Hanawa’s 78 laps were five better than the team of Joey Crisostomo and Alexander Smith.
Rounding out the top three slots in the overall division was Yuichi Takahashi, who completed 71 laps in the race.
Hanawa’s victory in the Enduro also included garnering top honors in the Four-Wheel Drive Unlimited Division. His nearest competitor in the division was Keiko Hamaguchi, who was able to complete only 60 laps. The team of Crisostomo and Smith took home the Buggy Unlimited Division top spot after beating out Takahashi by a mere two laps.
While the Enduro races were going on, fans lined up adjacent to the racetrack to watch competitors take on one another in both the Mud Bog Challenge and Tuff Rig Challenge.
The Tuff Rig Challenge was probably the toughest it’s been in a while as competitors ran through some difficulties, including not being able to get through a tough mud pit, breaking parts, and even losing a tire.
Nonetheless, both challenges weren’t a disappointment as fans enjoyed the action.
“The whole event is great and has been very exciting. The rig and mud bog challenge are my favorite events,” said Jose Vasquez who is just visiting friends on the island. “If I can make it back or be here around this time of the year, I will definitely make my way to Smokin’ Wheels.”
