Beck’s Women’s GFA Cup soccer tournament to kick off

THE Guam Football Association has partnered with Ambros to present the inaugural Beck’s Women’s GFA Cup soccer tournament, set to begin play at the end of the week.

In the first-ever women’s tournament, eight teams from the recently concluded Bud Light Women’s Soccer League will compete in a tournament-style format to decide the league’s top teams. All matches will be played on Fridays and Sundays at the GFA facility in Harmon.

The tournament will be played in a double-bracket format. The winning teams from the preliminary rounds will stay in the upper bracket to compete for the Women’s GFA Cup, while the other teams will drop to the lower bracket to compete for the Silver Championship.

The undefeated Orange Crushers enter the tournament as the No. 1 ranked team, while Hyundai will compete at the other end of the draw as the No. 2 ranked team.

The Orange Crushers are led by Kristin Thompson, the league’s “Golden Boot” winner, notching 12 goals for her team to lead the league in scoring.

Second-place Hyundai has a slew of players in the top five goal scorers for the league: No. 2 Olivia Flores, No. 3 Arisa Recella and No. 4 Jannel Banks.

The other teams in the tournament are No. 3 dck Masters, No. 4 Quality Distributors, Paintco Lady Strykers, Guam Shipyard,, and the Pretzel Maker Bombers.

Beck’s GFA Cup Men’s Tournament

Nineteen men’s teams from all three different divisions of the Budweiser Men’s Soccer League will compete for the 5th Annual GFA Cup in a single-elimination bracket, presented for the second straight year by Beck’s.

The 19 teams participating are: Guahan ICRC, Hyundai Family FC, FC Shotguns, Cobras, Big Blue (Div. II), Calvo’s Insurance Sidekicks, Quality Distributors, Paintco Strykers (Div. I), Cars Plus FC, Big Blue (Masters), Guam Shipyard, Rovers FC (Div. II), Fuji Ichiban Espada FC, Paintco Strykers (Div. III), Doosan FC, Rovers FC (Masters), Coffee Beanery’s United FC, Sinajana Ambassadors and the Bank of Guam Crushers.

The men’s tournament begins March 24 at 5 p.m. when Guahan ICRC faces Hyundai Family FC. The FC Shotguns will face the Cobras in the day’s later game.

Complete rules and regulations for both tournaments are available at the GFA main office. The official draw and schedule is posted on bulletin boards at the GFA facility. Tino San Gil, Secretary General of GFA and Cheri Stewart, Women’s Committee Deputy Chairperson, participated in a blind draw for the women’s tournament last week to select the placement of teams.
