LAST Sunday, the Wettengel Field was filled with some hard-hitting rugby playoff action as several teams participated in the 15th Annual True G.R.I.T. (Guam International Rugby Tournament).
With some intense playing and aggressive hitting, both the men’s and women’s matches gave fans no reason to be disappointed. Clinching the title for the men’s division was Para Todu, while the Little Blacks from Japan took home the women’s championship.
Facing off against Team Southside, Para Todu knew they couldn’t let their guards down if they wanted to win the Cup Match.
Despite allowing Southside to open the game with a score a few minutes in, Para Todu took control from that point on and was able to put a beating on Southside to pick up the 36-12 victory.
After missing the first day of the tournament, Will Williams made his presence felt and was able to score two long tries to help lead his team to victory.
Southside tried effortlessly to get back into the game, but the deficit was too large and when the final whistle to end play was blown, it was Para Todu who celebrated the win.
In the plate match, Babas and Beers were set to take on each other in a rematch from earlier in the tourney.
Both teams kept one another busy throughout the closely contested match. However, it was Babas who took advantage of late scoring to clinch the 29-21 victory.
The Bowl Match featured Team Southern taking on a much bigger and stronger Team Samoa. Throughout the match, Southern used their strength in speed to take out Samoa and claim the 36-15 victory.
Women’s Cup Match
Visiting from Japan, the Little Blacks easily disposed of Team Poksai in the women’s championship match 43-7. Despite suffering a huge defeat, Poksai’s Demi-Rae Shimizu and Erica “Speedster” Quichocho were able to post their team’s only points.
