IF YOU consider Guam to be your home, whether you are Chamorro or not, the Chamorro language is part of your heritage. You should either know it or always be learning it. Too many people who claim Guam as their home refuse to acknowledge or respect that heritage. There are many resources out there to help people learn, and so many dångkolu and dikike’ na ways that you can promote the Chamorro language. Given what time of year it is, I humbly offer that this month you celebrate the Chamorro language by telling someone that you love them in Chamorro.

It was Valentine’s Day yesterday. Last year I wrote a column titled “Love in Chamorro” that featured a list of phrases you could use to tell someone special in your life that you love them in the Chamorro language. Instead of some obvious variations like “Hu guaiya hao,” I wrote up some romantic gems like “Munaofragu yu’ gi i matå-mu/ I have been shipwrecked in your eyes” or “Mangge i pappå-mu? Pine’lo-ku na gaipappa i anghet siha/ Where are your wings? I thought that angels have wings.” People had a lot of fun with it.

Since I know that all the lovers on Guam couldn’t possibly express all the love they feel in their hearts on just one day, I thought I would write once again a list of phrases for people looking to express themselves to someone special in the lesser-used of Guam’s two official languages. Some of them are meant to be serious, while some are meant to be silly! Use them at your own risk!

Guaiya yu’, guaiya yu, sångan na un guaiya yu’.
Love me, love me, say that you love me.

Hågu ha’ i malago’-hu.
You are all I want.

Hunggan kaduku yu’ ... Kaduku yu’ put Hågu!
Yes I am crazy ... crazy about you!

Hu guaiya hao mas ki “Glee” lao ti hu guaiyai hao mas ki “How I Met Your Mother.” Ayu na “show” gi i telebikbik kumomprende yu’ mas ki Hagu. Komo taotao ayu, siempre este umasågua ham na dos.
I love you more than “Glee,” but I don’t love you more than “How I Met Your Mother.” That television show understands me more than you do. If it was a person, we’d already be married.

Para dos amåntes gi i ichan, ti guailayi un påyu.
For two lovers in the rain, an umbrella isn’t necessary.

Ågang i mediku put fabot, sa’ inakka’ yu’ ni’ i “lovebug” ta’lo.
Call the doctor please, because I’ve been bitten by the love bug again.

Ti meggai tiningo’-hu, lao hu tungo’ na hu guaiya hao.
I don’t know much, but I know I love you.

Anggen ya-mu este na betsu, hu tugiyi hao. Anggen ti ya-mu i betsu, i otro tumuge’.
