AS MOST of you are reading the Variety today over your morning coffee, President Barak Obama is back in Charlotte, N.C., getting ready to deliver one of the most important speeches of his life.
As he wraps up the Democratic National Convention, will the President be able to make the case that the American people should return him to office for four more years ... and give him a congress he can work with?
Most of all, will he be able to convince a solid majority of voters that he has a plan to really get the American economy back on track ... not just for the billionaires, mega-banks and major corporations (most of whom are doing fabulously under his watch), but for construction workers, teachers, firefighters and police, independent shopkeepers, factory workers and family farmers ... the backbone of America?
It ought to be a slam dunk, especially given Obama’s basic likeability and outstanding oratory skills.
But for two big reasons it isn’t.
First, for all his hope and change progressive rhetoric, and for all the right wing cries of socialism, the President has basically governed as a traditional moderate Republican. From day one, his economic team has been made up almost exclusively of Wall Street insiders such as Robert Rubin, Timothy Geithner and Ben Bernanke ... not outstanding progressives he could easily have turned to, such as Nobel Prize winning economists Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz.
Rather than being a full blown “New New Deal” that would have directly created a large number of jobs in a short period of time, his economic stimulus package was too small for the scale of the problem, and (in an effort to get Republican support) was heavily weighted towards tax cuts – the least cost effective way to stimulate an economy.
His much derided “Obamacare” isn’t anything like the “Medicare for all” national single payer system advocated by progressives. It is the conservative Heritage Foundation/Mitt Romney plan, adapted to the national stage, and vetted by the major insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
Just this week, the New York Times ran a well-researched story outlining all the ways in which the domestic policies of Richard Nixon are well to the left of Obama.
Was the President just being pragmatic? Did he make the decision that these were the best deals he could get, and that – given the grave state of the economy in 2008 and early 2009 – taking action fast, even if it wasn’t the best action, was just too important to “let the perfect become the enemy of the good?”
Perhaps. But back then, the (national ... not Guam) Republican Party was rightly blamed for the mess their policies had created, and a strong push by Obama for the policies he had campaigned on might well have succeeded. Had he done so, it might have been the Main Street economy that recovered strongly, not just the Wall Street economy.
For reasons I will explore in future columns, the policies based on “trickle-down” economics, massive deregulation, and unfettered “free” trade that have been the bedrock of Republican philosophy since the Reagan years have been an unmitigated disaster for America’s middle class ... although they have worked perfectly for the ultra-rich. Democrats need to start governing as though they understand this if they want to win.
Second, the Republican Party has launched an unprecedented effort to tilt the playing field of this election. Since 2010, measures such as voter ID laws and limitation of early voting hours have been rammed through by Republicans in a number of states that threaten to disenfranchise millions of minority, elderly and student voters ... all of whom typically lean strongly Democratic.
As I mentioned in my last column, the people on the right have also shown an unprecedented willingness to pay fast and loose with the truth in this election cycle.
Worst of all, in the wake of the United States Supreme Court’s astounding Citizen’s United decision, right wing billionaires such as the Koch brothers (whose father was a founder of the John Birch Society) and Casino magnate Sheldon Adleson are ready to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into the effort to defeat President Obama, and his down-ticket Democratic supporters.
In short, they are literally trying to buy our democracy ... and in a television age, they just might succeed.

Part 3
I believe most Americans are uneasy with the liberal direction even if they are not fully convinced it is at stage three. But it is. The USA is on the verge of becoming a combination of Greece and Sweden - where almost anything goes and fiscal responsibility is a joke.
If the president wins reelection, this country will continue to undergo a radical social and economic upheaval.
But if Barack Obama loses, the liberal movement in America will be dealt a crushing blow.
That's what's at stake on November 6th
hasta
Part 2;
The federal colossus in Washington is reaching into every area of American life - even as President Obama has increased the debt by more than five trillion dollars in less than four years.
This is liberal nirvana: a big spending central government dispensing "social justice" and calling many shots in the free marketplace. Soon the feds will control the health care industry.
Of course, the results of the leftwing blitz have been disastrous.
The economy is moribund with banks refusing to lend capital for expansion because they fear business failure.
Our currency is tottering because the USA has to borrow billions of dollars every day in order to service debt.
And employers are loath to hire because they don't know how Obamacare will affect their bottom line.
You would think the left would take a look at the chaos in Europe and slow down a bit.
Not happening. If you watched the Democratic Convention coverage you heard some incredible stuff.
Sandra Fluck and her crew not only want you to pay for female birth control; they also want you to pay for "transgender medical needs." That means if Harry meets Sally and they want to switch genders through expensive surgical procedures, the American taxpayer gets the bill. And if you oppose that - you are a bigot
hasta
Part 1;
According to a new poll by The Hill newspaper in Washington D.C., 54% of likely voters believe President Obama does not deserve another term based on his economic record.
With rising gas prices once again punishing working Americans, and with fear in the air over unemployment, there is a very good chance that Mr. Obama will join Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush as one-term presidents.
And, if Barack Obama does go down, so does the liberal movement in America, which has made great strides over the past three and a half years. Consider the following developments:
- Gay marriage is now accepted by most folks.
- "Medical marijuana" is openly sold in many cities to people with no maladies whatsoever.
- Anyone who opposes abortion can be categorized as biased against women.
- Successful Americans and prosperous small business owners are not paying their "fair share" in taxes.
- And, you are racist if you oppose Barack Obama's liberal political viewpoint.
In addition, nearly half of American households are now receiving welfare - but if you want to control entitlements, you are anti-poor.
Almost 50 million folks are receiving food stamps, and a record amount of workers are filing for disability payments.

According to Gallup, Americans give good marks to Obama on the deficit, creating jobs and the economy in general.

Today, Rasmussen reports on the mood of America:
---
A president’s job approval rating is one of the best indicators for assessing his chances of reelection. Typically, the president’s job approval rating on Election Day will be close to the share of the vote he receives.
Currently, 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's job performance. Fifty-four percent (54%) at least somewhat disapprove of the job Obama is doing (see trends).
The Rasmussen Employment Index fell sharply, and confidence in the labor market is now at the lowest level of 2012.
Generally speaking, a decrease in the index suggests the upcoming government reports on job creation will be weaker than the prior month’s report.
Just 21% of workers report that their firms are hiring, while 23% report layoffs.
That’s the second straight month in which reported layoffs top hiring.
Additionally, 29% of those who have jobs are worried about losing them. That’s up four points from a month ago and the highest level of concern measured since last fall.
Overall, 32% of American adults now rate their own personal finances as good or excellent.
That’s down seven points from four years ago today and down three points since the day the president took office

I think this has always been the case, except that it has become more prevalent since the consolidation of the media. So, one person such as a Rupert Mudoch, majority director at News Corp., which operates FOX, WSJ and other notable outlets, can pretty much dictate to those who work under his media empire what world view his directors, which include a Saudi prince, want. If they want Saddam out, for instance, make the case to the American electorate that Saddam is a threat to the U.S. (which he was not). In domestic policies, on the other hand, if he does not like immigration to change the demographics of America, he can direct the outlets under his purview to attack immigrants; legal or not is irrelevant when being profiled. Which is why the Supreme Court left open the door for further challenges to the Arizona law.
Ironically, the strength of this Republic, the free press, has become a liability that undermines its overall freedoms.
I have always admired o' bama and his views on religion.

America is a unique nation. At our revolution, we were the first nation to be goverened by the people. We chose our President, our House and our Senate. We, the people chose our leaders.
Other nations were in awe. These nations were ruled by Kings, Emperors, Queens, Princes, Despots and Generals.
Never in history did a nation allow itself to be ruled by the people. The idea was unthinkable. We would fail they all said. A government chosen by the people will surely fail they all said.
Up until 2008 America led the world in military, science, athletes, medicine, space exploration, religious freedom, opportunities, the arts, quality of life etc.
Are you better off now than 4 years ago ?
