WE'RE just a few days away from Election Day 2012, when we’ll be able to answer that question, finally. It seems as though the campaign, most especially the U.S. presidential campaign, has gone on interminably. At least we’re not saturated here by the television ads, as some people in the so-called “swing” states are. They will breathe a collective sigh of relief when it is, finally, over.

In the run-up to this year’s election we have often turned to polls to give us some indication of how folks may be thinking of voting. Polls provide grist for the journalism mill, giving us something to write about, and talk about.

Most of our polling is done by the students of Dr. Ron McNinch of the University of Guam, who has also been writing a weekly column for us this election season under the odd title “Why My Wife Hates Politics.” We’ve had some fun with that, although the ubiquitous Dr. McNinch seems to be everywhere.

His latest may have been intended for release after next Tuesday’s election, for comparison purposes, but it was “leaked” and picked up by the media. His research, he said, predicts a solid majority in the 32nd Guam Legislature for the Democrats, 9-6 maybe, or perhaps even a veto-proof 10-5. He also says Madeleine Bordallo is likely to be re-elected, and the For-Profit Bingo Initiative, Prop-A, is doomed to defeat.

We’ll see. In the meantime we also have our own weekly poll, which we only post on Mondays, and for which participants must go to our website, www.mvguam.com, in order to vote. We wondered how our question this week: “If the election were tomorrow, for whom would you vote to represent Guam in Congress?” was doing, so yesterday afternoon we checked. We were surprised.

Sen. Frank Blas Jr., the Republican candidate, is way ahead. He’s received 688 votes, or 63.5 percent, to Delegate Bordallo's 374, or 35.6 percent. Ten voters said they will vote for someone else, presumably Jonathan Blas Diaz, the write-in candidate.

That’s a pretty impressive lead for Sen. Blas, but what struck us was the total number of votes, over a thousand. That’s very high for one of our polls, but apparently the candidates found out the question was there and are urging their followers to cast a vote. We do not make any claim for the reliability of this poll. It is just a sample with no scientific value or significance. Still, Blas is way ahead.

Is that how Tuesday’s real poll will come out? We don’t know, but our poll question remains up for two more days, so maybe a few more votes will be cast. We will let you know the final results in next Monday’s edition.
