GUAM got a nice bit of national television publicity this week, but most of you probably did not catch it because it played live on the local CBS affiliate at 2:30 Labor Day Monday afternoon.
The program is “Sunday Morning,” a long-form news magazine show that was originally hosted by Charles Kuralt, the famous on-the-road correspondent for the network who passed away several years ago. The show survives him, and is now hosted by another Charles, Osgood, whose specialty is wry radio commentary.
We’ve been a fan of Sunday Morning for many years. It is one of the best-produced television news magazine shows on the air; so as we were watching the digital recording of Monday’s show, we were delighted to see they were going to feature a video “postcard” from Guam.
It came at the end of the show, as correspondent Barry Peterson led off with a clip of our Gov. Eddie Calvo announcing our nine votes for Mitt Romney during the recent Republican national convention. Saying most Americans do not know much about the U.S. outpost that is so far west it is east, they cut to some shots of Tumon Bay and Japanese tourists enjoying themselves in our crystal clear water.
The reporter then interviewed Variety columnist Michael Bevacqua about Guam’s unique history and status as a U.S. territory, wandered into the jungle at night with a herpetologist in search of the infamous brown tree snake – they found a couple – and concluded with a nice interview with one of our popular local characters, Jeff Pleadwell, who operates Jeff’s Pirates Cove where many tourists stop on their way around our island.
Overall, it was a really nice piece of national television publicity, contrasted with the Comedy Central and Steven Colbert stuff we usually get. This was a serious report, balanced and done without poking any fun at us whatsoever. It’s the kind of boost you can’t buy, portraying our island as the beautiful place it is, with a unique culture.
Good for CBS, we thought. They sent somebody out here to do a story after Gov. Calvo and our delegation appeared at the GOP convention. Well, not quite. The Sunday Morning “postcard” was actually produced last April. It was supposed to run quite some time ago, but kept getting preempted. The casting of our votes for Mitt Romney provided a “hook” that boosted the piece into the producer’s attention and got us on a nationally-televised show.
It was nice to watch, a really feel-good piece about the island we love. Thanks, CBS!
