Happy school labor

  • PDF

IT WAS a big day for Guam’s public schools this past Saturday, as hundreds of volunteers turned out to clean and spruce up the campuses ahead of the opening of the new school year.

Thanks to Gov. Eddie Calvo’s Adopt-a-School program, private sector firms, other GovGuam agencies and individuals put their names on the line and backed up the promises with volunteer action. From the Department of Administration, to the Governor’s Office, to the Guam Fire Department, hundreds of government workers turned out to trim trees, pull weeds and mow lawns.

Other projects involved more substantial repair work and painting, with companies such as J&B Tech and military outfits like the 644th Communications Squadron from the Air Force chilling in. New school Superintendent Jon Fernandez was delighted with the turnout of “happy labor” and expressed hope that the enthusiasm will last through the entire school year.

We recall the days of the late Gov. Ricky Bordallo and his happy labor Saturdays, when volunteers worked on all sorts of public projects. This was a positive effort to really “own” the public schools and showcase them. Congratulations to everyone who pitched in and helped.

Volunteer civic work is commendable. I remember Ricky's "happy labor" days. Volunteer? Not really - the pressure from the top down to us workers was intense and volunteering was expected.
