Fishermen rescued from Chinese boat

TEN fishermen aboard a Chinese fishing boat were rescued late yesterday afternoon after the vessel ran aground at the entrance of Apra Harbor close to the Spanish Steps.

Naval Base Guam Harbor Security units reported the grounding to Coast Guard Sector Guam and were first on the scene at around 5:40 p.m.

Navy Harbor Security could not get close enough to effect a rescue but they kept the Coast Guard informed of the number of personnel on board and the conditions that led to the vessel capsizing.

The Coast Guard immediately sent one of its rescue boats and notified Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 who responded with two helicopters, the first arriving within five minutes as the vessel was overturning, and immediately deployed rescue swimmers. The second helicopter arrived three minutes afterward and hoisted the crew from the water.

All 10 crew members were flown by the two HSC-25 helicopters to Naval Hospital Guam for observation and treatment. One member sustained lacerations to his body.

The status of the vessel and conditions of the crew members was not available as of press time.
