THIS Fall, the University of Guam is launching the Access to Higher Education Financial Assistance Program which awards up to $3,000 per academic year to qualified students. The amount awarded is based on a student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Expected Family Contribution (EFC) score.

Created through Public Law 31-237 and funded by GovGuam, Access to Higher Education is part of UOG’s portfolio of locally funded financial aid programs. Eligibility requirements include Guam residency for at least four years, a high school GPA of 2.5, and a completed 2013-2014 FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

“The first step in the financial aid process is to fill out the FAFSA,” UOG Financial Aid Director Mark Duarte said in a statement. “Your EFC score is necessary for a number of financial aid opportunities.”

The program is designed to work individually or in conjunction with the federal Pell Grant, which requires an ECF of 0 to 5,081. UOG’s Access to Higher Education, however, increases a student’s chances of receiving aid with an EFC eligibility range of 0 to 7,000.

Duarte added: “We’ve structured the Access to Higher Education program in such a way that the students who receive lower Pell Grant funding receive higher amounts.”

The deadline to apply for the Access to Higher Education Financial Assistance Program is Aug. 30. Applications and eligibility requirements are available online at www.uog.edu/financialaid. For more information, contact the UOG Financial Aid Office at 735-2288.

The UOG Fall semester begins Aug. 21, and class registration is ongoing.
