AN IRATE 47-year-old mental health patient found wielding a machete in a Dededo home surrendered peacefully to police after about four hours of negotiations Saturday morning.

According to the Guam Police Department, officers from the Dededo Precinct Command received a call from the Guam Fire Department’s medical units asking for assistance about an uncooperative patient of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

When informed that the patient was brandishing a machete, the police immediately dispatched GPD’s Crisis Negotiation Team led by Lt. Mark Torre, Sgt. Emily Charfauros, and Sgt. Michael Aguon.

GPD public information officer Paul Tapao said the Special Operations Command unit or SWAT team was also sent to ensure the female patient would not inflict any harm.

The responding team surrounded the undisclosed home and began talking to the mentally-ill woman.

After four hours of dialogue, SWAT officers managed to pacify the patient without incident.

She was taken to Guam Memorial Hospital for physical and psychiatric evaluation.
