THE driver involved in last week’s crash at the tri-intersection that killed a 4-year-old girl is finally in police custody.
Marco Nelson, 28, of Harmon, was charged by police with reckless driving; eluding a police officer; driving under the influence; DUI with a BAC (blood alcohol content) greater than .08 percent; DUI with a BAC of .08 percent or more with injuries; DUI with a child under 14 years old on board; disobeying a red traffic light; having a child under 4 years old in no car seat; vehicular homicide while intoxicated; manslaughter; and driving with an intermediate driver's license with a BAC greater than .02 percent.
On Oct. 24, Nelson was driving north in a Toyota Yaris along Route 8 in Maite before 11 p.m. and was clocked by a Guam Police Department Highway Patrol officer driving at about 62 miles per hour. The officer was heading south and turned around to pursue Nelson, who pulled into the parking lot of the Shell Service Station by Tiyan. However, instead of stopping, Nelson went around the gas pumps and drove back onto Route 8 and continued to head north.
A high-speed chase ensued and Nelson allegedly ran a red light at the tri-intersection in Barrigada and collided into a Hyundai Tucson before crashing into a concrete pole.
Police found the little girl in the car after they gained access into the vehicle on the passenger side door. The girl was taken to Naval Hospital but died early morning the next day.
Nelson was transported to Guam Memorial Hospital for serious injuries. His condition improved over the next few days and was eventually released yesterday but was picked up by law enforcement authorities.
An autopsy performed on the little girl revealed she died from a broken neck and a crushed abdomen.
Nelson was booked and confined. He’s expected to appear in magistrate’s court today.
