Two doctors received the Guam Medical Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award at a special ceremony held during the opening of the Micronesian Medical Symposium.
One of the recipients is Dr. Pablo Guzman, an internist, medical oncologist, and hematologist at St. Anthony’s Clinic. Throughout his life, Guzman has served on several Guam Memorial Hospital committees, practiced on Guam and the United States, and volunteered in various non-profit organizations. He has also been a member of several professional societies in the medical field.
The other recipient is neurologist Dr. Hwang Chen who has practiced in Guam, the United States, and Taiwan. In 1972, Dr. Chen served as a staff neurologist at Guam Memorial Hospital and from 1979 to 2010 he served as a neurology consultant at GMH.
In addition, 12 physicians were honored in an “In Memoriam” candlelight ceremony. The ceremony, held for the first time, honored those in the medical profession who made an impact on the people of Guam.
Legislative resolutions recognizing and commending these physicians for their good work and dedication in the medical field were presented to their families.
The doctors recognized were Dr. Charles Parent, general surgery; Dr. Edgardo Leonidas, Ob-Gyn; Dr. Edwardo Cruz, general surgery; Dr. Ernesto Espaldon, plastic surgery; Colonel George Martin, emergency medicine; Dr. Glocrito Sagisi, Ob-Gyn; Dr. Jose Cariaga, internal medicine; Dr. Leon Concepcion, pediatrics; Dr. Ruben Basilio, nephrology; Dr. Sinforoso Tolentino, orthopedics; Dr. Virgilio De Guzman Lopez, Ob-Gyn, and Dr. Ramon Arevalo Tinsay, general vascular surgeon.
