White Cane Safety Day celebrated

THE visually impaired gathered at the ITC intersection with their white canes yesterday in support of White Cane Safety Day, which commemorates the independence and perseverance of the visually challenged. The white cane is the symbol of visual impairment and a tool of independence.

Beatrice Salas, vice president of New Vision Guam, stated: “We want to show the public we can move around and we can cross streets with our white cane.”

Acting Gov. Ray Tenorio signed the proclamation declaring Oct. 16 as White Cane Safety Day.

“When you go out there and use your cane, you show courage. There are a lot of people in this community who don’t have a reason but say they can’t get around or that they can’t get to work and that they can’t do things,” Tenorio lamented.

In addition to the wave, there are other events the organization SinA (Self-Advocates in Action) has scheduled for the end of October and the middle of November to bring awareness to the challenges of the visually impaired.

A 2nd Annual Blind Relay is scheduled for Oct. 27. In this relay race, participants wear sleep shades to mimic visual impairment. With the use of white canes, the participants will then navigate their way around Paseo. The winning team at last year’s Blind Relay was the Department of Integrated Services for Individuals with Disabilities Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

On Nov. 17, there will be a 2nd Annual White Cane 5K Power Walk in Hagåtña.

New Vision Guam is an advocacy group for those with low-vision or blindness.

SinA is a self-advocacy group that provides resources and education for individuals with all types of disabilities.

White Cane Safety Day is celebrated on Oct. 15 every year across the U.S.
