THE Australian-based cruise ship Sun Princess arrived last Saturday for a day visit, bringing in over 2,500 visitors to the island, a Port Authority of Guam press release announced.

The liner arrived at 8 a.m., carrying 1,941 passengers and 852 crew members. Most of the passengers are citizens of Australia and New Zealand.

The vessel arrived from Yokohama, Japan and departed Guam at 5 p.m. for its next destination, Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, then to Brisbane, Australia and on to Sydney, Australia.

According to PAG, this is the Sun Princess’ third visit to Guam and the sixth vessel from the fleet of Princess Cruises to make a port call to Guam. From 2005 to date, the Pacific Princess, Royal Princess, Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, and Sun Princess have made previous visits to the island.

“Although our primary function is cargo handling operations, the Port Authority has always recognized and will continue to be supportive of Guam’s tourism industry,” PAG general manager Mary Torres said. “The staff, working with the Guam Visitors Bureau, has strived, to give a warm first impression of our culture to visitors arriving.”

Upon arrival, the passengers were greeted by this year’s Miss Earth Guam, Miss World Guam, Miss Universe Guam and the Irensian Taotao Tano cultural dance group.

I seem to recall that Carnival Cruise Lines pulled out of San Diego due to over taxation and over regulation.

They relocated some ships to Australia.

Guam is close to Australia.

A smart move would be to arrange for cruise ships to stop here on their Asian trips.

We can plan ahead for improved docks, we can plan ahead for 1000 - 4000 passengers in a single day for shopping, food, activities.

We can plan ahead for transportation, We can have the legislature work out a tax fee for the ship, and each passenger.
