A MEASURE introduced by the Legislature as a substitute for vetoed Bill 516-31 has been signed into law by Gov. Eddie Calvo.
The Governor’s Office confirmed that Bill 496-31, authored by Speaker Judi Won Pat, has already been approved and that a transmittal letter will be sent to the Speaker soon.
Bill 496-31 focused on extending the obligation deadline to use about $60 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the Guam Department of Education. The new deadline is now Sept. 30, 2013. The money is set to be used for various projects, including the construction of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) classrooms.
Amendments to the bill included giving the Judiciary and the Legislature the authority to hire unclassified employees and grant cultural organizations and groups up to 10 hours of community service that would be paid with funding from the Tourist Attraction Fund.
