THERE are still no details on the alleged shooting that took place in front of the headquarters building at the Guam National Guard Readiness Center in Radio Barrigada Tuesday morning.

Master Sgt. Fernando Diaz reportedly shot himself in the head outside the facility just before noon and was rushed to Naval Hospital for treatment. He died at around 9:21 p.m. Tuesday.

An investigation into the case is ongoing.

Guam National Guard spokesman Capt. Ken Ola said they are still awaiting information from the Guam Police Department, which is conducting the investigation.

“As soon as GPD gives us a consolidated report, we’ll have a statement,” Ola said.

The Variety learned Diaz is from Maina. Benny San Nicolas, Asan/Maina mayor, said he knows the family and was surprised to hear about the alleged incident.

“Fernando is a very athletic person and it was a shock for us in the village to hear about him,” he said. The mayor’s office is willing to help the family.

“We will assist them if they need help,” he said.

So sad. Condolences to the family. A million reasons to look forward to life after serving your country. I just wish someone were able to reach this warrior to pull him through this difficult time.

Let's lift up his family and respect his memory and service to our island and our great Nation.
