FEW details are being released on a 50-year-old man who reportedly shot himself in front of the headquarters of the Guam National Guard Readiness Center in Radio Barrigada yesterday morning.
The incident was reported at around 11:26 a.m., according to Guam Fire Department spokesman Lt. Ed Artero. The man was transported to Naval Hospital where he is in critical condition.
The compound was locked down for nearly two hours while police conducted their investigation.
Guam Police Department spokesman Officer A.J. Balajadia said detectives are looking into how and why the incident occurred.
Balajadia said the man’s injury was to the head. Artero also said it was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Variety spoke to Guam National Guard spokesman Capt. Ken Ola, who said the Guard is going to allow GPD to complete its investigation before they make any comment.
“Of course in any incident on any installation, there are protocols that we have to follow. A variety of different things are being looked into,” he said, adding there was no training going on at the center at the time of the incident and that it was just a regular day at the facility.
He said once GPD completes its investigation and submits its findings to the Guard, they will determine if information can be released to the community.
Meanwhile, sources told the Variety that the injured man is National Guard Master Sgt. Fernando Diaz, who is also a baseball player with the Guam Masters Baseball League. Neither Ola nor Balajadia would confirm this because of the ongoing investigation.
