THE 75-year-old man who died after getting struck by a vehicle Wednesday night along Route 3 near the NCTAMS front gate has been frequently seen by residents who live in the area walking to and from the Shell store.
Jose T. Cabrera, of Dededo, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 8 p.m. by Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola. An autopsy was expected to be performed yesterday but as of press time, Espinola was not available to comment.
One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said she drives along the same road daily and always sees Cabrera walking along the side.
The resident said one day she saw Cabrera being helped by medics a few months back after being hit by a vehicle, but he was still conscious and was sitting on the ground.
Cabrera’s death marks the 10th traffic-related incident for 2012.
The initial call was received at 7:03 p.m. Wednesday night and officers from the Dededo Precinct responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found Cabrera’s lifeless body on the road and a Toyota Corolla not too far from the scene, just off the street in a jungle area. Guam Police Department’s Highway Patrol Division was activated about 10 minutes later to start an investigation.
Through the course of the investigation, officers learned that the driver of the Corolla was heading north when he struck Cabrera, lost control of the vehicle, and wound up in the jungle area.
Several factors are being looked into such as alcohol and/or speed. No arrests have been made or citations issued. Police at the scene told Variety the road conditions were dry. But the area also has no streetlights.
