IT WILL take some time for fire investigators to determine what caused the fire at the Global Recycling Center in Dededo on Monday. The fire was completely extinguished at 9 p.m. that same day.

Guam Fire Department spokesman Lt. Ed Artero said they had to use heavy equipment to remove debris to prevent the fire from spreading.

A team from the Guam Environmental Protection Agency is also doing their part. According to spokesperson Tammy Jo Anderson Taft, they will be getting together later this week to decide what the next steps will be.

She said it would be too early to say if a Notice of Violation would be issued to the owners of the company.

“The facility has three permits: solid waste collection, solid waste storage, and solid waste processing,” she said. “All those permits are issued with conditions and the permits also follow environmental law, so those are areas the team will be looking into. They will look into compliance with regard to the permits.”

GEPA is advising people who see fires to report it immediately. They can call the main office during regular working hours at 475-1658/59/28.
