GUAM is participating in the 18th Annual International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 15.

The cleanup will be held at 18 different locations around Guam, according to a news release from the Guam Coastal Management Program (GCMP).

“This is the largest volunteer event in Guam and we are happy to see so many people come out every year to help protect the ocean from marine debris,” said Thomas Morrison, director of the Bureau of Statistics and Plans, one of the lead agencies involved in the cleanup.

“Families of all ages and students are encouraged to come to one of the cleanup sites,” he added.

Cleanup sites include: Tanguisson Beach, Pågo Bay, Asan Cut, Tagachang Beach, Ipan Beach Park, Agat Cemetery Wall, Dungca’s Beach    , Inarajan Bay, Paseo de Susana, Merizo Bay, Asan Shore, Umatac Bay, Piti Shore, UOG Marine Lab, Agat Beach, Marbo Cave Area, Talofofo Bay-Surfside, and Oka Point.

The Coastal Cleanup is a combined effort by government of Guam agencies, retail and wholesale businesses, dive shops, private and nonprofit organizations, federal agencies and the U.S. military.

Volunteers will be given a free T-shirt while supplies last and free admission to Fish Eye Marine Park Observatory on the day of the cleanup event.

According to GCMP, Guam’s participation in this event is important as the information gathered on collected trash will be recorded and sent to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington D.C.

“The data will be published by geographic location and used for environmental studies. The results of past cleanups have already been used in the development of international and environmental laws,” GCMP stated.
