THIS week, 24 new apprentices started their on-the-job training experience for the Guam Power Authority.
As part of their introduction to the GPA workforce, the apprentices will train for operational positions in the generation division, transmission and distribution division, and the power system control center (PSCC).
According to a news release, seven of the 24 apprentices will be assigned to the generation division, 12 to transmission and distribution, and the remaining five to PSCC.
In addition, 24 GPA employees will mentor the newly recruited apprentices to ensure they meet trade occupational requirements.
Moreover, the apprentices will also attend classes in trade theory as part of their on-the-job training.
“Efforts to recruit technical positions to meet critical operational needs have been challenging,” stated GPA Assistant General Manager of Operations Melinda R. Camacho.
Camacho further said the apprenticeship program allows GPA to plan for its future workforce by training and mentoring individuals to fill these critical positions over time.
She added that the apprenticeship trades at GPA are essential for power system reliability and operational efficiency.
“GPA is very pleased with the selection of apprentices for this cycle. GPA must be proactive in developing and investing in its workforce to ensure a safe and reliable power system and continuity of service for years to come,” Camacho said.
