GEC ready for primaries

  • PDF

Voters can expect smooth operations at the primary elections tomorrow, Sept. 1, as long as they bring photo identification.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The results of the primaries will determine which senatorial, congressional, mayoral, and public auditor candidates will move on to the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

This election year there are about 49,118 registered voters.  On Saturday, voters will be selecting candidates from one political party – Democrat, Republican or Independent – only.

Questions or concerns about the election can be addressed to GEC staff who will be at the office on the day of the primaries.

In addition, a test election will be conducted this evening at the UOG Fieldhouse to prep staff and triple check that all equipment is in working order.

GEC chairman Joseph Mesa said: “I believe that we’re prepared. Now will there be bumps along the way? Probably, so.  It happens for every election. But I am confident that under the leadership of our first lady director we will succeed and if there are problems, I’m sure they can be resolved.”

An expert from Election Systems and Software, Tobey Dingbaum, checked the tabulation machines and has ensured that all four are in working order.

“They are running great,” Dingbaum told the GEC.

“Now is the opportunity for those who want to exercise that freedom to come out and vote. People should use this opportunity. If they want to change or keep it as it is,”stated Mesa. “This is the time to use their voice. The vote is very precious. People die for it.”

Let's hope the sanctity of the vote is protected this time. It's the same everywhere. Not just Guam.
