GOV. Eddie Calvo is off-island for the next several days. Office of Communications Deputy Director Phillip Leon Guerrero said Calvo will be in Washington D.C. attending a governors’ conference and meeting with federal officials.

From there, the governor heads to Tampa Bay, Fla., for the Republican National Convention.  He will be back in time for the primary elections next Saturday.

Republican Party of Guam chairman Mike Benito said Guam’s GOP party representatives for the convention are the governor, first lady Christine Calvo, Telo Taitague, Martha Cruz Ruth, Donna Jones, Peter Alexis Ada, Arthur Clark, Jay Rojas, Dave Sablan, Mike McPhearson, and Bob Bulluck.

Benito said there are committee meetings happening now and next week, adding everyone is in full campaign mode and casting their votes for GOP candidates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. The GOP convention, which started yesterday, runs up to Aug. 30.

The GOP of 2012 is out of the mainstream of American politics, but local Republicans have to follow party mandates and dictates, so they cannot speak out against a runaway, out-of-touch, theocratic Party.

First, the GOP loves federal spending, but impresses upon folks that it stands on the side of deficit hawks. Locally, they try to shift as many costs to the federal side of the ledger as possible even as they demand for more autonomy. One of the reasons why political status is in limbo is because Gov. Calvo has not been able to rally his own wealthy friends to support the cause. Instead, he has resorted to "throwing some crumbs" (read: kick start the Decolonization Committee) to those who have been traditionally for political status, hoping to appease them until the 2014 elections are over.

Second, the reason why wealthy folks like the status quo is because Guam is a 'tax haven.' So, the game plan is to keep taxes as low as possible, even zero in some cases (plus a rebate, too), then shift costs to the already sapped federal Treasury. The media is complicit in this regard. Since they are a business entity, they are competing with other businesses for that same dollars floating in the economy. You cannot expect, but a nuanced opinion on taxes from them.

Taxes are linked to political status, once again, except here on Guam, they do not want to pay -- enough -- for a self-sustaining Government.
