Voters meet candidates at the mall

VOTERS squeezed between table displays last Saturday as they took advantage of the opportunity to meet this year’s senatorial and congressional candidates at the Micronesia Mall. The meet and greet event was held at the mall’s center court from 1 to 3 p.m. with the goal of giving the general public more access to the candidates.

For some, it was a chance to meet the new candidates who are running for office. “At least we are familiar with their faces. I’m mostly familiar with who I voted for last election,” said Della Panes, a mall-goer who perused the booths.

Others found it a convenient way to interact with the candidates and quiz them about issues.

“My issue has always been education: the conditions of our schools and how our students are doing. It saddens me. It’s been too long,” said Bobbie Cabatic of Dededo, who is undecided on which party she will be voting for.

In addition, Cabatic is concerned about programs for students with special needs, saying many families go off-island for better programs. “We need to do more to keep our families here,” she said.

Tamuning resident Freddie Steven is looking for better support for the elderly. He also places veterans and medical issues high in his list of priorities. Steven is also concerned about the economy. “People need jobs,” he said.

Steven saw the event as a way to help encourage and educate voters. “We have a voice, we may as well use it,” Steven said.
