IN ORDER to facilitate and push forward China visa waivers for Guam, Sens. Tina Muña-Barnes and Benjamin Cruz have introduced Resolution 486-31, which calls for a broader final decision on the Marianas visa waiver program.
The resolution also calls for U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to expand the visa waiver program to Guam.
U.S. congressional support for the waiver is also being sought. In a letter dated Aug. 16, Muña-Barnes appealed to recent Guam visitor Rep. Joe Wilson to encourage support from other members of Congress for the China visa waiver program.
“I remain optimistic about the expansion of our visa waiver program and I am encouraged by the discussion with Congressman Wilson. I look forward to working with the gentleman from South Carolina, as well as our local and federal stakeholders in support of a solution that will keep our nation safe while strengthening Guam’s tourism industry,” Muña-Barnes said.
The China visa waiver will allow Chinese tourists to travel to Guam without a visa and as a result help expand Guam’s tourist market and improve the island’s economy.
