Assurances given on school bus service
GUAM Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez yesterday met with Department of Public Works Director Joanne Brown to finalize logistics related to the upcoming double session at George Washington High School.
The new schedule will allow work to continue on 17 state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classrooms at the high school. In order to ensure sufficient space for students, GWHS administrators have decided to hold a double session through early October with incoming freshmen set to attend classes in the afternoon.
“DPW and GDOE are absolutely on the same page with regard to the double session at GW,” Fernandez stated in a news release. “We are finalizing details, and we will be ready to go on Monday.”
GDOE and DPW are partnering to provide a sufficient number of buses to accommodate the temporary schedule. Fernandez said GDOE has committed to procuring between 12 to 15 private buses and an estimated $150,000 to cover fuel and overtime costs.
He said bids to provide the leased buses were due yesterday and are in the final stages of technical review, with DPW staffers helping to finalize the routes and committed to operating the buses for the afternoon students. The goal is to finalize and distribute the bus schedule.
“The temporary double session is going to allow us to deliver these state-of-the-art classrooms to our students this school year,” Fernandez said. “That’s the real goal for all of us – to support and inspire our budding scientists and engineers in our public schools.”
The meeting to finalize the details for the double session was coordinated with the help of Vince Leon Guerrero, special assistant to Gov. Eddie Calvo on education.
A critical item in GDOE’s 14-point checklist is the provision of regular, timely school bus transportation to and from schools.
After GWHS moved into double session, concern about meeting the school transportation needs of the school was raised.
