GDOE posts readiness list

WITH less than a week before the opening of classes, the Guam Department of Education has posted a copy of the school readiness checklist summary on its website. The checklist is a requirement which all 40 schools under GDOE’s purview must submit on a weekly basis to indicate their progress in preparing their school for the opening of classes on Aug. 20.

GDOE has a school readiness team that has been reviewing the checklists every week. Some of the components in the checklist include teacher vacancies, facility maintenance concerns, student schedules, teacher workdays, and items outlined in a 14-point checklist.

According to the checklist, around 33 percent of the schools have finalized their student schedules, 85 percent have completed their orientation, 70 percent of maintenance jobs are in progress, and 85 percent have completed their teacher vacancy contingency plans.

According to GDOE Deputy Superintendent Robert Malay, as of yesterday, there have been significant improvements reported by the schools, which were not reflected in the report posted on the website.

According to Malay, one of the most impressive efforts reported to GDOE was the work that Price Elementary School did to significantly decrease their repair and maintenance work orders. Last week, the school reported around 168 work orders. As of Monday, the number was significantly reduced to 26.

“We’ve got to applaud the efforts of the crews going out there, our partnership with the other government agencies, all of the organizations that are coming in and volunteering, as well as the parents and the teachers. Everybody is really making a concerted effort to get these schools open,” Malay said.
