IN PREPARATION for the adoption of the Common Core Standards in the island’s public school system, the Guam Department of Education will be conducting a series of training sessions for its principals and teacher leaders this week, from Aug. 13 to 15, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Guam Marriott.

Middle schools on-island will have their training today, followed by the high schools on Aug. 14 and elementary schools on Aug. 15.

The Common Core Standards provide a nationwide benchmark for English, mathematics and language arts. According to GDOE, these standards describe the knowledge and skills that students in K-12 need to prepare them for secondary education and the workforce.

These set of standards have been adopted for Guam’s public school system last February. So far, the standards have been adopted by 46 states, Guam and four other territories.

For more information, contact Joe Sanchez, GDOE administrator for research, planning and evaluation, at 300-1638.
