CHUUKESE youth clients at the Department of Youth Affairs were visited yesterday by the first lady of Chuuk State, Bersita Elimo, as well as a couple of pastors.

According to DYA Director Adonis Mendiola, the visit was a follow-up to an earlier visit by Chuuk State Gov. Johnson Elimo last month.

Mendiola said Bersita is an educator by profession and is also chief of secondary schools in Chuuk State. During her visit, she implored the Chuukese clients to not take their education for granted here on Guam.

“Their parents obviously sacrificed to come here. Some are working and some are being productive to help provide for them a better life. They need to realize there are success stories out there,” she said.

One example is one of the pastors from Chuuk, retired Col. Arnold Marcus, whom Mendiola said is hoping to provide services for them at DYA as well as other churches, in addition to giving the kids a home away from home.

Mendiola said Bersita also gave a speech in Chuukese which was very inspirational to the Chuukese clients.

“She really stepped up her call to parents and the community to make sure they keep their children out of trouble while they are here,” Mendiola said.
