HEAVY thunderstorms late yesterday afternoon resulted in flooding in the northern and central parts of Guam.
Chip Guard, of the National Weather Service, said an urban and small stream flood advisory was issued in the evening up until around 10:15 p.m.
The thunderstorms were expected to bring 2 to 3 inches of rain into the northern and central areas of the island including Piti, Hagåtña, Tiyan, the airport area, Mongmong, Tamuning and Tumon.
The excessive runoff from the heavy rainfall caused elevated levels on small creeks and streams as well as highways, streets, areas with poor drainage, and low-lying spots.
The island has been experiencing heavy rain during the past few days.
Brandon Aydlette, National Weather Service forecaster, earlier told Variety the rain was caused by light surface winds that stream over the island.
“And with the light winds coming over the island, these clouds don’t move. They just kind of sit in place,” he said, thus causing rain and flooding in parts of the island.
“This is just typical of the wet season,” he said.
